During January 2024, the United States reported several crippling and unprecedented weather incidents. Tornadoes, ice, snow. One of the USA’s most surprising weather events was an extreme cold front that swept across the nation in mid-January. About 150 million US residents were under a wind chill warning or advisory for dangerous cold and wind. The storm killed dozens of people throughout the US, primarily from hypothermia or road accidents caused by dangerous driving conditions. Western Canada was also engulfed in the deep freeze. In January 2024, Europe was also badly hit by severe winter storms. Storm Henk brought record-low temperatures to parts of Sweden and Finland. In Western Europe, heavy rain has led to extensive flooding, displacing residents in parts of France and Germany. In January 2024, the United Kingdom was hit by three major storms.Many experts are warning that the situation on Earth has become dire. They say that we must urgently reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to prevent further global warming. “We are failing terribly at reducing our emissions. It’s becoming more and more clear than it was just, say, five years or so ago that getting to 1.5 degrees (Celsius) is catastrophic for society. We have underestimated how vulnerable our systems are. We have underestimated how quickly these extreme events, like heat waves and heavy rain, are going to change. We are way more vulnerable than we realized. And it is even more urgent than we thought that we dramatically reduce our emissions.”Our Most Gracious Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan) reminds us that the only solution to climate change is a global shift to the vegan lifestyle. “Things can always change overnight if people turn and walk in the right direction. We know animal-people meat eating, scientifically and physically speaking, is the major cause of our planet’s destructive direction. The opposite of the animal-people meat diet is a vegan, compassionate diet. All the animal-people products, all the killing of men or animal-people must be stopped if we want to stop the climate change.”
