Even though we axolotls are actually salamanders, some people somehow got into the habit of calling us the "Mexican walking fish." We have a distinct appearance with a wide head, lidless eyes, and a long, tapered tail, as well as four limbs with tiny digits at the ends. The six feathery branches on our head - our most noticeable feature - are external gills for respiration. Probably our most fascinating feature is our ability to heal and regenerate.
