Animal-People Meat Consumption Fueling the Next Zoonotic Pandemic, Part 5 of a Multi-part Series

Currently, one of the most concerning zoonoses is mpox. Previously, mpox outbreaks had been sporadic and isolated. However, during the first eight months of 2024, more than 15,600 cases were reported globally with 537 deaths. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global emergency. It’s now been detected in at least 13 African countries.

In the USA, the incidence of COVID-19 during the summer of 2024 was extremely high, driven by a new variant called “FLiRT.” Meanwhile, in Australia, hospitals struggled to handle the growing number of cases of COVID-19 and other influenza-type illnesses.

Recently, an alarming outbreak of E. coli occurred in Flathead, Colorado, USA. Flathead County Health Department reports five restaurants are linked to the E. coli outbreak from tainted meat. A distributor sold the ground beef to multiple restaurants. “This outbreak in Montana, with 14 sick and, unfortunately, one death, is actually one of the largest E. coli outbreaks we’ve seen in the last 20 years.”

Peru’s Health Ministry as of Thursday reported 117 deaths from dengue this year, compared to just 33 during the same period last year. Suspected cases have also skyrocketed reaching around 135,000.
